Energy Consumption vs. Eye Protection: A Head-to-Head Comparison

(1) Energy Consumption: OLED is the superior one

When displaying black or dark tones, OLED screens can turn off individual pixels, consuming no power—unlike LCDs, which keep the backlight layer constantly lit. This results in significantly lower energy use. However, with white or bright content, OLEDs require more pixels to light up, narrowing the energy gap with LCDs. Overall, OLED is more energy-efficient for dark-content-heavy scenarios.

(2) Eye Comfort: LCD Holds a Slight Advantage‌

Prolonged screen use makes eye protection critical. LCDs typically use DC dimming, adjusting brightness via voltage with minimal flicker, making them eye-friendly for extended viewing. In contrast, most OLEDs employ PWM dimming, which can cause noticeable flicker at low brightness, potentially leading to eye strain or dryness. That said, some manufacturers are improving OLEDs with high-frequency PWM dimming to reduce flicker-related eye strain.
