How to Choose your screen? (Ⅱ) Display Performance Speaks Volumes

Author:

Display Performance Speaks Volumes

(1) Contrast Ratio: OLED is the superior one

Contrast ratio is a key metric for display quality, defined as the brightness ratio between pure white and pure black. OLED screens excel here: since pixels can fully turn off, they emit almost no light when displaying black, achieving near-perfect darkness and stark contrast with bright whites, easily surpassing 10,000:1. In contrast, LCDs, with their always-on backlight layer, allow some light leakage even in black scenes, limiting contrast to 1000:1–3000:1 and resulting in less immersive dark visuals.

(2) Color Performance: The two are evenly matched

OLEDs offer wider color gamut and higher saturation, producing vibrant, eye-catching visuals—reds appear richer, greens more vivid, and blues deeper—like a "colorful cloak" over images. This makes them ideal for visually striking content. LCDs, however, deliver more natural and subdued colors, appealing to users prioritizing realistic color accuracy.

(3) Response Time: OLED is the superior one

Response time determines motion clarity. OLEDs switch pixel colors in microseconds, ensuring smooth playback of fast-paced content (sports, action films, high-refresh-rate games) with minimal motion blur. LCDs, with slower liquid crystal response, may exhibit slight ghosting during rapid movements, affecting viewing fluidity.
